Botanical Name: Amyris balsamifera L.
Family: Rutaceae.
Synonyms: Schimmelia oleifera ; West Indian sandalwood; West Indian rosewood.
Origin: Mainly growing in South and Central America and in the West Indies (Jamaica and Haiti). It has been introduced to tropical zones all over the world.
Botanical Description: A small bushy tree with compound leaves and white flowers. It grows wild all over the island of Haiti.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood. The oil is a pale yellow slightly viscous liquid. Yield 2 to 3%.
Aroma Profile: Has a faintly peppery, slightly sweet-woody complex top note. Body note is variable losing richness and complexity, with a weak balsamic-woody dry out.
Major Constituents: Eudesmol, valerianol, elemol.
Adulterants: Virginia cedarwood oil, copaiba balsam.
