Origin: Indigenous to southeastern China and northeastern Vietnam. Now widely cultivated in China, India, Philippines.
Botanical Description: An evergreen, small tree up to 12-meters (36 ft) high. The plant has whitish trunk with short stemmed, dark green simple leaves and attractive, single axillary yellowish-green to reddish flowers. The distinctive star shaped fruits are made up of eight separate carpels that each form a small capsule with a single pale, brown, shiny seed inside.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the well ripened, brown colored fruits. The oil is a pale yellow to amber yellow mobile liquid. Yield up to 8%. Solidifies at low temperature.
Aroma Profile: Has a similar profile as the anise seed oil. Sweet, clean and very licorice like (anisic).
Major Constituents: (E)-anethole (95%), anisaldehyde, methyl chavicol, limonene, α-pinene, linalool.
Adulterants: Fennel oil, synthetic anethole.
Regulatory Status: ASP 1710. GRAS 182.10.
Aromatherapy: Mildly euphoric, cheering, sense enhancing.
Blends well with: Orange, rose, lavender, pine.
Safety Data: Maybe an eye/skin irritant. Avoid during pregnancy.
