
Botanical Name: Matricaria recutita L.
Family: Asteraceae (Compositae).
Synonyms: Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert; Matricaria chamomilla L.; Matricaria suaveolens L.; Hungarian chamomile; sweet false chamomile; true chamomile; blue chamomile; mayweed.
Origin: Native to Europe and Northwest Asia. Naturalized and very common in North America and Australia. It's now extensively cultivated in Hungary, Eastern Europe and Argentina.
Botanical Description: An annual herbaceous very aromatic plant growing up to 60-cms (24 in.). The plant is dark green with delicate feathery leaves, thin roots, erect stalks, alternate leaves, yellowish blossoms and simple daisy like white flowers. The base of the flowerhead is characteristically hollow.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of flowers. The oil is intensely blue and somewhat viscous liquid. Yield 0.3-2%.
Aroma Profile: Has sweet-herbaceous top note. Middle note is sweet with a coumarin like note and fruity apple-like undertone. The dry note is sweet tobacco-like.
Major Constituents: α-bisabolol, bisabolol oxide A, β-farnesene, chamazulene, bisabolol oxide B.
Adulterants: Rarely adulterated.
Regulatory Status: GRAS 182.20
Aromatherapy: Relaxing, soothing, nourishing.
Blends well with: Geranium, lavender, bergamot, neroli, patchouli, rose, ylang ylang, jasmine, clary sage.
Safety Data: Non-toxic. Fairly mild skin irritant.
