Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea L.
Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae).
Synonyms: Clary, muscatel sage, common clary.
Origin: Native to southern Europe to central Asia. Cultivated worldwide in Central Europe, in the Mediterranean region, Russia, USA, Morocco, England, France.
Botanical Description: A strong biennial or perennial plant about 1.5-meter (5 ft) high, with square stem, large wooly, oval green leaves, and attractive white or light-violet flowers borne amongst leafy, violet colored bracts.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves. A colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid. Yield 0.7 to 1.5%.
Aroma Profile: Has a sweet-herbaceous top note, with a fresh bitter-sweet undertone. The dry out is balsamic, tea-like.
Major Constituents: Linalyl acetate (up to 70%) and linalool (up to 25%), β-caryophyllene, myrcene.
Adulterants: Synthetic linalool and linalyl acetate.
Regulatory Status: GRAS 182.20
Aromatherapy: Euphoric, centering, visualizing.
Blends well with: Lavender, cedarwood, coriander, cardamom, frankincense, geranium, bergamot, jasmine.
Safety Data: Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing. Avoid during pregnancy.
