Origin: Native to eastern and southern Asia, Africa, Australia and day-neutral regions. Grows extensively in the Mediterranean region. The absolute is produced mainly in France.
Botanical Description: An evergreen shrub or vine that grows up to 10-meter (30 ft) high, with delicate bright green leaves and star-shaped white odoriferous flowers up to 4 cm in diameter. The plant is usually pruned to about 2 meter to help in harvesting.
Extraction: Concrete is obtained by extracting flowers with petroleum ether. The absolute is obtained by extracting the concrete with ethanol. The absolute is a dark orange, somewhat viscous liquid. Yield 0.3%.
Aroma Profile: Has a warm, rich, intensely floral-sweet top note. The middle note is waxy-herbaceous, sweet-floral, oily fruity. The dry out is floral, tea-like.
Major Constituents: Benzyl acetate (20%), benzyl benzoate (20%), linalool, methyl jasmonate, phytol.
Adulterants: Frequently with indole, synthetic jasmine bases, ylang ylang fractions.
