Family: Lauraceae.
Synonyms: Laurus persea L. ; Laurus winteriana L.; bay laurel; Grecian laurel; sweet bay; true bay; true laurel.
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region. It has been cultivated especially for its berries, in France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Yugoslavia, China, Israel, Turkey and Russia. The oil is produced mainly in Yugoslavia.
Botanical Description: A small evergreen tree up to 20-meter (66 ft) high, with dark green, shiny, leathery leaves. Male and female flowers are borne on separate trees. Yellowish-white flowers in the case of female trees develop into black fruits or berries.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and young branchlets. The oil is a greenish-yellow mobile liquid. Yield 0.75 to 1.5%.
Aroma Profile: Has a fresh, strong, sweet-camphoraceous top note, with a spicy-medicinal middle note. Fairly tenacious with a pleasant sweet spicy dry out.
Major Constituents: 1,8-cineole, α-pinene, linalool.
Adulterants: Eucalyptus oil, 1,8-cineole.
Regulatory Status: Food additive. FDA 121.1163. GRAS 182.20.
Aromatherapy: Relaxing, sensual, harmonizing, anxiety reducing.
Blends well with: Cypress, clary sage, juniper, pine, rosemary, lavender, lemon, orange, cinnamon, clove.
