lavender spike essential oil

Botanical Name; Lavandula latifolia Medic.

Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae).

Synonyms: Lavandula spica ; aspic; broad-leaved lavender; lesser lavender.

Origin: Grows wild in the mountain areas around the Mediterranean basin, especially around Spain and France. France and Spain are major suppliers of oil.

Botanical Description: A n herbaceous plant up to 1-meter (3 ft) high. It has lance-shaped leaves, and has thicker and taller stems than lavender. It's less blue than lavender and has more gray flowering tops.

Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the sun-dried flowering tops. The oil is colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid. Yield 1 to 3%.

Aroma Profile: Has a fresh, camphoraceous, herbaceous top note. The middle note is sweet-camphoraceous, reminiscent of lavandin. The dry out is a clean dry-woody note.

Major Constituents: Linalool (40%), 1,8-cineole (20%), camphor (12 to 15%).

Adulterants: Lavandin oil, eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, Spanish sage oil.

Regulatory Status: GRAS 182.20.

Aromatherapy: Balancing, soothing, normalizing, gently clarifying, calming, and relaxing, purifying, invigorating, energizing.

Blends well with: Lavandin, lavender, clove, cinnamon, pine, cypress, sage, oregano, patchouli, rosemary, cassia, neroli, petitgrain, cedarwood.

Safety Data: Non-toxic, non-sensitizing. Skin irritant. Avoid during pregnancy and if epileptic.
