
Botanical Name: Thymus vulgaris L.
Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae).
Synonyms: T. aestivus ; T. valentianus ; T. webbianus ; T. ilerdensis ; garden thyme; French thyme.
Origin: Native to southern and southeastern Europe. Grows wild or cultivated in Spain, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Central European countries, Turkey, Israel, Morocco and North America. Distillation is undertaken mainly in Spain, France and Israel.
Botanical Description: A perennial, herbaceous shrub up to 45-cm (2 ft.) high with a woody root and much branched upright thin stem. It has small grayish-green, oval, aromatic leaves and pale purple or white flowers.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam and water distillation of the partially dried above ground plant parts. This is redistilled to give the white thyme oil. The oil is a colorless mobile liquid. Yield 0.5 to 1.5%.
Aroma Profile: The top note is spicy-herbaceous, sweet, medicinal. The body note is intensely herbaceous, medicinal, spicy, sweet, warm. The dry-out is a dry bitter-sweet herbaceous aroma.
Major Constituents: Thymol (30 to 75%), carvacrol, p-cymene, γ-terpinene.
Adulterants: Oregano oil and other oils.
Regulatory Status: GRAS 182.20.
Aromatherapy: Purifying, cleansing.
Blends well with: Cedarwood, lavender, lavandin, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, clary sage, peru balsam, melissa, pine, bergamot.
Safety Data: Skin irritant. Avoid during pregnancy and with high blood pressure.
