Anorexia Treatment

Anorexia nervosa, or anorexia as it is commonly known, is a type of eating disorder where an individual refuses to maintain a body weight that is normal and has an obsessive fear of putting on weight. A person suffering from anorexia initially goes on a diet to lose weight, but over time the weight loss functions as a symbol of control and mastery over the individual. The need to loose weight becomes secondary as compared to the issues and fears one has related to one’s body. In order to exercise control over his or her body, the individual indulges in behavior such as excessive exercise, taking diet pills, laxatives, and/or enemas. This pattern becomes a kind of addiction. Although a large percentage of those who are affected by anorexia are female, it is increasingly spreading among males as well.

The treatment of anorexia sometimes becomes difficult as people suffering from anorexia feel that there is no problem with them. Anorexia treatment of patients in the early stages may not involve hospitalization. This is especially true in the first six months or when there is a minimum amount of weight loss. However, if you are looking to cure anorexia in people suffering from a serious case, it is necessary to hospitalize them. The treatment of anorexia does not only involve changing the eating habits of a person, but also an attitudinal change. Patients who are anorexic need to be counseled for a year or so in order that they change the feelings that cause their eating issues. These issues could be related to their family, self-esteem, and their weight. Sometimes, patients who are anorexic may be prescribed medicines to lessen their depression. A doctor prescribes these medicines and they are taken in conjunction with counseling.

Even though people who have anorexia deny that there is a problem, the truth is that anorexia could have some serious repercussions. One can however take effective steps to treat anorexia. If your family member or friend is suffering from anorexia the best thing that you can do to help him is to love him or her. People who are suffering from anorexia feel very comfortable and content with their illness. They fear putting on weight as they feel it is a sign of losing control. Very often they are in denial that there is a problem and go to any extremes to avoid eating food and putting on weight. This restricts the person’s efforts in treating anorexia. You can help by not giving in when the patient pleads that he/she does not want to eat.
