Allergic Conjunctivitis Natural Cure

Allergic conjunctivitis is an allergic infection on the surface of the eyes. It is an inflammation of conjunctiva caused by an allergy. It is also known as pink eye. The conjunctiva is a membrane covering the white part of the eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis is a very common condition that occurs when the eyes come in contact with allergens. This type of conjunctivitis is not contagious. Some of the common allergens (allergy causing substances) are:

  • Pollen from trees, grass, and ragweed
  • Animal skin and secretions such as saliva
  • Perfumes
  • Dust
  • Fine animal hair
  • Cosmetics
  • Skin medicines
  • Air pollution
  • Smoke.

When these allergens come in contact with the antibodies in the eye, an allergic reaction begins.  The eye now releases chemicals; these chemicals cause the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. Your eyes get itchy, watery, and red. Sometimes your eyes may also get swollen due to the allergens. Reddening of the eyes takes place quickly and is accompanied by swelling, itching, and tearing. Mostly both the eyes get the infection. The eyes become red, swollen, and sometimes painful. There are no serious complications of allergic conjunctivitis, but the persistent discomfort is common and may last till the infection is cured.

Allergic Conjunctivitis Symptoms

  • The symptoms may appear quickly, as soon as the eyes come in contact with allergens. Some of the typical symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis are:
  • Eyes become red: This is the most common symptom of allergic conjunctivitis. The eyes become red as the small capillaries in the conjunctiva widen.
  • Pain: Some people have pain in one or both the eyes. If the eyes are very painful, swollen, and red, you should consult a doctor immediately.
  • Itchiness: As the eyes get irritated you might get an itching sensation. Avoid rubbing your eyes, else it will aggravate the problem.
  • Swollen eyelids: The infection may cause inflammation so the eyelids may puff up.
  • Soreness: The swelling and inflammation may cause soreness and tenderness in your eyes. You might feel burning in your eyes.

Allergic Conjunctivitis Treatment

The best conjunctivitis home remedies is to avoid exposure to allergens. Prevention is better than cure. There are also several drops that are available in medical stores for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. They provide relief you from itchy, watery, swollen, and red eyes. In addition:

  • Do not rub your eyes, even if you feel itchy. Rubbing will worsen the inflammation.
  • Do not wear contact lenses unless the infection is completely cured.
  • You may also have to take antihistamines if home remedies fail to cure the situation.
  • You can put a water-soaked cloth on your eyes for relief.
  • Many eye drops may cause burning when you use them for the first time, but this will usually go in few minutes. Do remember that any medicine can potentially cause side effects, so consult your doctor before taking any medicine, including eye drops.
  • Try and consult a doctor immediately if the infection is unresponsive to any of these treatments.
