Natural Cure for Malaria

Malaria is caused by a parasite known as plasmodium, a parasite that infects the body’s red blood cells. Malaria occurs when the anopheles mosquito bites an individual and transmits the malaria parasites into blood. These parasites spread through the bloodstream towards the liver, where they mature and then infect the red blood cells. The characteristic symptoms of malaria are sweating, chills, pain and fever. Some individuals also experience coughing, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

The time period from the mosquito bite until the onset of illness is generally 2 to 3 weeks. Some types of malarial parasites may take much longer to cause symptoms. They may stay dormant in the cells of the liver during this time. Some parasites may remain dormant even after recovery from malaria, thereby leading to recurrent illness. The onset of malaria infection is usually similar to flu or other viral illnesses, and hence it is important to be cautious especially when living in areas with increased mosquito population or after travelling to high-risk areas. Pregnant women are at risk for transmitting the infection to their unborn babies. Transmission of malaria infection could also occur through blood transfusions. Malaria treatment must be done early as, if left untreated, it could become very severe.  In some cases, serious complications may arise from malarial infection. These include anemia from red blood cell destruction and cerebral malaria. Other complications include dehydration, liver failure, kidney failure and enlargement of the spleen.

Treatment of malaria involves the administration of anti-malarial drugs. Many individuals also employ home remedies to treat malaria. However, these must not be substituted for proper medical care. Holy basil leaves are believed to be helpful in alleviating malaria symptoms. One can consume the holy basil leaves raw or in the form of a decoction. For fever and chills, application of a cold pack on the forehead is known to be effective. Cinnamon is also considered to be a beneficial malaria remedy. Add a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon, a pinch of pepper and some honey to a glass of water and drink. Treatment for malaria also involves prevention against mosquito bites. Mosquitoes tend to bite especially at night and hence one should take precautions during these times. Wearing long sleeved shirts and long trousers help in protecting the body from mosquito bites. Light colored clothes also do not attract mosquitoes. Sleeping in rooms that are screened with mosquito nets is also very beneficial in avoiding mosquito bites.
