Schizophrenia Treatments

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that must not be confused with manic depression or a split personality disorder. It is a condition that causes a person to lose perspective on reality and could also cause the person to have hallucinations, extreme delusions, and suffer from problems of hearing things that do not actually exist. Schizophrenia is a condition that is diagnosed by an experienced doctor or psychologist based on the symptoms that are usually described to the doctor by caregivers or family members. There is no medical test for schizophrenia. However, recent studies have shown that schizophrenics do have an increased activity of dopamine in their brains. This can be used to confirm the diagnosis of schizophrenia or to support the theory that a particular patient is suffering from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia has a genetic link and is also linked to social factors in the early life of an individual. Symptoms tend to appear around early adulthood.

The treatment of schizophrenia is therefore based on the reduction of dopamine related activity through the prescription of anti-psychotic drugs. In most cases, schizophrenia is associated with environmental factors and triggers as well as with other social issues that may affect a patient. Treatment for schizophrenia would therefore require help from the patient’s family as well because most patients respond better when the support system is actively involved in the process of rehabilitating a schizophrenia sufferer. Schizophrenia treatment also includes therapy because a lot of patients tend to have issues related to their past which cause an aggravation of the condition. Modern techniques to treat schizophrenia even include yoga or other forms of physical therapy that are likely to reduce stress and improve the overall health of an individual. Most patients who have good jobs are likely to respond well to treatment. Schizophrenia is not a form of dementia. When a patient is not experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia such as delirium he or she may be remarkable clear and have seemingly normal or even super normal brain function.

Alzheimer’s is another brain condition that is different from schizophrenia because it is degenerative and is a form of dementia. There is no known remedy to cure Alzheimer’s disease. The condition is terminal because it will eventually lead to the degeneration of the part of the brain that controls involuntary functions such as the heart beat and respiration.  Alzheimer’s disease can be managed using medication that would either slow or nearly stop the progress of the condition. Other cures for the disease are currently being studied.
