Yeast Infection Natural Cure

A yeast infection is a very common infection that occurs mainly in the vaginal area of many women. This condition, which affects about 75% of the women, at some point or the other, is caused by a disturbance in the balance of the yeast and acid levels in the vagina, leading to an overgrowth of the yeast. Yeast infections are caused mainly by the Candida Albicans fungus. The symptoms of a yeast infection are discharge, pain, redness, burning, irritation and itching in the vaginal area. The discharge could have the odor of yeast or bread and is usually thick and white, resembling cottage cheese.

Treatment for Yeast Infection

It could take anywhere between a week to fifteen days to get rid of yeast infection. An effective yeast infection treatment should include the use of medicines, topical creams for the vagina and suppositories. Over the counter medicines which include Miconazole, Tioconazole, Butoconazole and Clotrimazole can be used to cure yeast infections. However, there are several home and natural remedies that can be used to treat yeast infections just as effectively as medicines and suppositories.

Home remedies for Yeast Infection

Given below are some effective remedies for yeast infections:

  • Yogurt: Plain yogurt contains live culture, which helps in restoring the balance of the acid bacteria and is therefore one of the most effective natural cures for yeast infection. The effects of Yogurt can be maximized by consuming it or applying about 2 tablespoons of it, to the affected area.
  • Garlic: Garlic has anti-fungal properties, making it a good natural remedy for yeast infections. Garlic could either be consumed or applied to the vaginal area, to maximize its effects.
  • Cranberry juice: Unsweetened cranberry juice should be consumed as it acidifies vaginal secretions, allowing them to fight off the yeast.
  • Licorice powder: A pint of water, to which a teaspoon of licorice powder has been added, should be boiled, steeped and strained. This water can then be used as a vaginal douche.
  • Vinegar: Vinegar is often used in the treatment of yeast infection, as it is acidic in nature and also has antiseptic properties. Vinegar too could be used as a douche, when mixed with water.
  • Herbs: The consumption of herbs like basil, rosemary and thyme tea should be increased, as they are a natural treatment for yeast infections.

Even after successfully treating yeast infections, it is recommended that starch-free powder be applied to the affected area, to prevent a recurrence of the condition. Other preventive measures include wearing loose cotton clothing, especially cotton underwear. Moreover, the use of bubble baths, scented sanitary pads or tampons and colored or perfumed toilet paper should be strictly avoided.
